Hello, I’m Sig Solo. Welcome to my channel and to this episode of Shave Stick Stories, Chapter 15. Today’s soap is the Turkish Derby, or Derby as the British say. It’s a very strongly scented citronella soap. Some might say it has a urinal scent. It weighs 75 grams and I got it for $4. That’s about it for the soap.
For my shave today, I’m using the Edwin Jagger DE89, or to be technically accurate, the DEL89L. The first ‘L’ refers to the line and the second ‘L’ indicates it’s the long handle version. This razor has a 71mm gap, a neutral exposure, and it measures 69 grams, with dimensions of 95 mm long and 30 mm wide, featuring lines on it. I have a Wizamet blade on its second use, paired with the Sterling Pro handle, specifically model 2654.
Now, let me just warm the brush up a bit. It must have had some cold water in it. Much better! I personally don’t enjoy cold water. I keep an extra one in this travel container, which is quite new.
The soap has a strong lemony scent, which I would describe as somewhat artificial. At first sniff, the scent reminds me of a white fluid, powdery toilet cleaner with a citrus aroma. So, there’s that association. But let’s see if the chemical side of that scent dissipates once I lather up.
As always, I’ll evaluate the five S’s: Simplicity of use, Scent, Scent strength, Slickness, and Skin feel. Starting with simplicity, it’s exploding on my face, so it’s easy to rate in this regard. Oh, maybe that was too much water. I have lather everywhere now!
For simplicity of use, I would rate it as very easy. The soap stick is on the harder side—not super hard, certainly not triple milled—but one of the harder types. I believe I’ve only used a fraction of the 75 grams, so I might be able to get 50, 60, or even 70 shaves out of this stick. It seems likely I could use this for a lifetime.
Now, back to the scent. Initially very strong, but it’s less chemical now. It doesn’t remind me as much of toilet cleaner as it did before. It’s bordering on pleasant for me. I’d give it a score of 2 because I didn’t enjoy the scent from the stick as much; it felt too much like a cleaner.
For scent strength, I’d rate it a 4. It’s strong and above average, but not so overpowering that it would give you a headache or linger in the bathroom for the rest of the day. I doubt that will happen.
The slickness so far has been good. The slickness score will be easier to evaluate on the second pass, so let’s give it a try here. I’m going to rate it a 4.
So far, we have a 5 for simplicity, a 2 for scent, a 4 for scent strength, and a 4 for slickness. That gives us 15 points before the final score, which is the lowest score I would recommend for using a stick.
Let me just wash my face quickly and then we’ll assess the skin feel. That was a nice wash. Now, let’s see how it feels on the skin.
Oh man, that feels comfortable. It’s not as dry as I expected. One side feels better than the other, but that might just be my hand. So, I would rate that a 4.
To recap:
– Simplicity of use: 5
– Scent: 2
– Scent strength: 4
– Slickness: 4
– Skin feel: 4
That gives us a total of 19 points. Apologies for the mix-up earlier.
So there you have it: 19 points in total. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, hit the bell, and share.
