Hello, I’m Sig Solo. Welcome to my channel and welcome to this Shave Stick Stories chapter 16. Today, I’m featuring the Nivea Men Body Shaving soap stick. Here it is—unfortunately, it’s discontinued. I mentioned this in a forum, and Scott Moore very kindly offered to send me one, as he had bought a stash when they were still available. So, here it is, thanks to Scott.
At the time these were available, they were priced between $5 to $8. According to my criteria, a product must be formulated specifically to be used as a shave stick, which means no pucks allowed, and the maximum price should be $10 at the time of purchase. This particular soap stick fits those criteria, although I received it as a gift.
For today’s shave, I’ll be using the Edwin Jagger DE89 razor. The actual model number is DEL89L because it features lines and is a long handle—95 mm long and 13 or 12 mm thick, I can never quite remember! It has a 71 mm gap and a little overhang, weighing in at 69 grams. It’s a great razor, so let’s get this party started.
I have three days of growth to tackle today. The soap stick twists up like a deodorant, which is quite handy. It has a nice, pleasant scent that reminds me of the Nivea Men After Shave Balm in the blue packaging. It smells very similar to the cream for sensitive skin in the same range. I recently saw it online, so I think it may still be available, though I wouldn’t bet on it.
For my brush today, I’m using the Sterling Pro handle with a 26 mm knot, which is perfect for this. Just remember to give it a good squeeze; this soap stick has a lot of water content.
Now, I’ll be evaluating and grading the soap based on several criteria: simplicity of use, scent, scent strength, slickness, and skin feel. After washing my face, I realized I need a little more water. So far, this is my sixteenth shave stick story, and while I haven’t achieved complete muscle memory yet, I’m feeling more confident with my techniques and the products I use. I’ve learned that most shave sticks are usable, and I haven’t encountered one I genuinely disliked yet. The lowest scorer to date has been the MU Sandalwood, which was also the most expensive based on grams. It was priced at about $9 for 35 grams, whereas this one is a better value and easy to use.
I would give this soap stick a score of five for simplicity. Now, I’m using a Viset blade that I’ve been using throughout July, and this is its third use.
Have you tried this soap stick? Were you able to get it before it was discontinued? I personally find the scent quite pleasant, so I’d rate it a three. The scent strength? It’s above average, so that gets a four. Oops—that felt like a cut! Sometimes, when using a razor you know well, you can get a bit too comfortable and go on autopilot, which can lead to a nick.
Anyway, the razor is doing great! So, to recap, that’s a five for simplicity, a three for scent, and a four for scent strength. That gives us a total of 12 points so far, with more to add once we assess slickness and skin feel.
It’s worth noting that Nivea claims their products provide extra care for the skin, so I have high expectations for the skin feel after this shave. In terms of slickness, I would give this a four, so we have:
– Simplicity of use: 5
– Scent: 3
– Scent strength: 4
– Slickness: 4
At this point, that totals 16. Now I’m just testing the overall skin feel. Oh wow, that feels fantastic—on par with the best I’ve tried. So that’s a solid five for skin feel.
To recap everything:
– Simplicity of use: 5
– Scent: 3
– Scent strength: 4
– Slickness: 4
– Skin feel: 5
That brings the total to 21 points overall, which is quite good.
