Muhle Grapefruit & Mint – Shave Stick Stories

Hello, I’m Sig Solo. Welcome to my channel and to this installment of Shave Stick Stories, Chapter 17. Today’s product is the Muhle’s Shave Stick, specifically the one called Grapefruit and Mint. This typically retails between $12 and $18, but I managed to snag it at a discount for around $9. So, it falls within the rules of this review series, where the maximum price for a shave stick is $10. The product must also be made specifically for shaving and weigh at least 35 grams.

It’s quite expensive for such a small quantity, but it does come in a well-designed container with a nice lid. You can twist it up and down like a deodorant, and you can even purchase extra refills to put in it, which is a great feature.

The scent? I detect a nice blend of mint and citrus, which is exactly what I was expecting. This marks the 17th shave stick story, meaning I’ve been at this for four straight months—April, May, June, and July. Today will be the final episode of this series, as I only have five sticks left: one from Creo and four from Rurok. The average score of the sticks I’ve already used is 22.5 out of 25, which is extremely high, while the Cremo’s have an average of 18.5, which is also quite good. So, I won’t be continuing this series after today. At the end, you can look forward to a scoring spreadsheet summarizing all the results and rankings.

Before I dive in, I’ll be using the Edwin Jagger DE89L first. The “L” stands for long handle, and the DE89 head features a 71-millimeter gap, so keep that in mind. The blade I’ll be using is a Super Iridium, which is on its fourth use. With that, let’s get this party started! The brush I’ll be using is the Sterling Pro with a 26mm knot, so let’s get it lathered up.

Now, onto applying this to my face. I’m working with three days of stubble, and today we actually saw a little sun. I wasn’t quite sure how to react, considering we haven’t had a sunny day in a while. Despite the sun being up all night during these months of Midnight Sun, it’s been cloudy and rainy for the past couple of weeks.

As I apply this, I have to say the scent is quite pleasant—citrusy with a hint of mint. The first Muhle stick I tried up north received a score of only 15 points, which has been the lowest so far among the shave sticks I’ve used. This one foams up interestingly; it lathers quickly, but it doesn’t seem to maintain its form for long.

I must admit, I’m feeling a bit disappointed. This is the most expensive stick per gram among all of them, and it’s only 35 grams for just under $10. I really need to start shaving before it bubbles away completely, so let’s get to it.

This lather is unsatisfactory, so I’d rate it a three for lather quality. Although it bubbles, it lacks stability and disappears quickly, indicating it’s more like a normal bar of soap in terms of its lathering properties. Based on this, I’ll give it a two because it falls below average. The scent is pleasant, but I find it quite faint, so I’ll give it a three. For scent strength, though, I can barely detect it now, which leads me to a dismal rating of one.

To test further, I’ll apply another layer of soap, just to ensure I’m not being overly harsh. I can sense the mint lurking somewhere within, but that’s about it. As a result, my final rating for scent strength will remain a one.

When assessing slickness, I must say it feels like shaving with water. There’s virtually no cushion or slickness at all, so I’ll also give that a one. After rinsing my face, I feel something odd in my ear—it’s soap! Oddly enough, that’s the only place where the soap seemed to remain effective, it seems.

So far, I’m looking at a two for simplicity of use, a three for scent, a one for scent strength, a one for slickness, and now I’ll evaluate skin feel. To be honest, it feels quite dry, almost like I shaved with a bar of soap. I will need to moisturize considerably after this shave, as this has easily been the worst experience I’ve had.

To be fair, my skin isn’t red from the soap, but I’ll still rate the skin feel a two. So to summarize: simplicity of use was a two, scent a three, scent strength a one, slickness a one, and skin feel a two. In total, that gives us a score of eight points. Anything below fifteen suggests not to purchase, so unfortunately, this is a clear miss for me.

You may find better ways to use this product than I did, but based on my experience, I really cannot recommend it for shaving. And considering its high price point, I’d certainly advise against buying it.
