Noble Otter Rei Momo: First Look at a Tropical Summer Soap

Noble Otter Rei Momo soap and aftershave splash on a shave table

Howdy, welcome back to A Texan Shaves. I’ve been working through a bunch of stuff I picked up at the meetup last weekend, and there’s one I really wanted to get to. This is Rei Momo from Noble Otter.

Cody said it’s coming very soon. What I can do is read you the notes right off the side label and put it through a full shave so you know what you’re getting into when it drops.

The Scent

Off the label: pineapple, coconut, banana, vanilla, and limonada suica. That last one is a sweetened condensed lime beverage - “suica” translates to Swiss, tied back to the condensed milk. A Brazilian take on Swiss lemonade. So you’ve got a big tropical fruit lineup sitting on a creamy, condensed-milk lime base.

Right away when I started loading the brush, something kept catching my nose that I couldn’t quite place. Thought it might be mint, but mint’s not on the label. It kept grabbing at me through the whole shave. I couldn’t figure it out until I got to the splash - turns out it was the coconut. Mellow on the soap, but it opens right up in the aftershave.

The Brush, and a Word About Noble Otter Brushes

I’m also breaking in something I grabbed new from the Noble Otter booth at the meetup - their new brush, designed after the Orbit label. Only one use on it so far, but I already love both the design and the brush itself. The Orbit aesthetic on a handle just looks sharp.

While I’m on the subject: if you don’t have a Noble Otter brush, you’re missing out. My black and white one I picked up at a grocery store in Texas. Yes, you can get Noble Otter at a grocery store here. It was on sale for around $18. Regular price I think is somewhere around $25 or $26. For that price, the performance is ridiculous. If you’ve got one and you agree, drop it in the comments. Let people know what they’re walking past.

For the razor today I’m running the Map Titanium Gem.

The Lather

This lather went crazy from the first load. Rich, thick, builds fast. Noble Otter’s base is like that every time - you just get a dense, full lather that almost works against you because you don’t want to stop playing with it. Had to remind myself there was a shave to get to.

I did two passes and the lather held up through both. Added a little water going into the second pass and it stayed right there. That coconut-adjacent something kept catching my nose the whole time - I knew I’d read the notes, but it just wasn’t clicking yet what it was.

The Splash

After the rinse, the splash is where it all made sense. The coconut that was sitting back during the soap opened right up. That’s what was mixing with the other notes and not landing for me - mellow on the bar, present on your face. It’s a really good coconut too. Not loud, not cheap-smelling. Just right.

The overall profile is creamy. Sweet, but not cloying. The fruit lands exactly where it should. It reads more like a candy-creamy sweetness than a dessert sweetness - tropical without being heavy. I’m not much of a gourmand guy as a rule, but anything tropical and summer-fruity like this? I’m on board completely. Cody hit it out of the park with this one.

Quick Note from the Meetup

One other thing I noticed at the Noble Otter table: they’re revamping the older labels. Not changing the formulas, just updating the look. The one I saw was Monoi de Tahiti. It used to have an environmental background - that tropical scene. The new version goes with a solid background, in line with the rest of their current products. Cleaner look, and they all match now.

And yes - it was great to finally meet Cody and his wife and kids face to face. We’ve been in the Shave Dad group together for a long time. Meeting in person at the booth was a good moment.

I’m back at the salt mines this week, playing catch-up after taking all of last week to prep for the meetup. You know how it goes. Next week I’ll be in San Marcos for work, so I won’t make Shave Masters on Tuesday - but I’ve reached out to someone to cover it. I’ll leave that as a surprise.

Keep an eye on Noble Otter for the Rei Momo release. The brush is coming along with it if you’re interested in that too. I’ve got an affiliate link in the description - code TEXANSHAVES for 10% off everything at Noble Otter. Use it whenever you feel like shopping.

Find your peace in what and where you can. See you next time on A Texan Shaves.
