Hey gents, Mike here from Long Island Shaving. Red, White & Rugged is the new collaboration between Strike Gold Shave and Razor Emporium, and I’ve got the matching soap and splash set right in front of me.

Full disclosure up front: Frank sent this to me free of charge for review. Thank you, Frank.

The label sets the tone immediately. Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the United States, who served from 1981 to 1989. The whole release is built around Reagan as an American archetype - small town Illinois kid who ended up in Hollywood, then the White House, rugged confidence, natural charisma, approachable without being soft. The product copy leans into that hard, and honestly the framing earns what it’s going for.

The fragrance itself is inspired by Wild Country by Avon, a classic I’ll admit I wasn’t familiar with. My stepmother used to sell Avon when I was a kid and the only thing I remember from those years is the Skin So Soft that everybody swore kept mosquitoes away. Wild Country wasn’t on my radar back then. I was probably ten or eleven. Apparently it was a big deal at the time, and it makes a lot of sense as the DNA for something called Red, White & Rugged.

The Scent

Top notes: bergamot, lavender, basil. Heart: geranium, coriander seed, anise. Base: oak moss, sandalwood, musk.

I got a chance to put some on my hand when the mail arrived this afternoon, so I’ve been living with this fragrance for a few hours before the shave. What hits first is the bergamot and lavender. I’m usually not a lavender guy - I’ll be straight about that - but the way this one is built, the oak moss and sandalwood in the base keep it firmly in masculine territory. The lavender doesn’t go soft or floral. The wood holds it down.

The heart is doing real work too. That coriander and anise bring a spiciness that I really like. It’s not aggressive, just present. The musk sits in the base. Firm enough to register, not heavy enough to dominate. This whole thing reads barbershop-adjacent with genuine wood underneath it. A little citrus lift at the top, spice through the middle, grounded below. Really enjoyable fragrance.

I applied a bit more before the shave started to track the dry down. The bergamot-lavender-oak moss combination holds up. That woodsiness is exactly what makes the lavender work for me on this one.

The Setup

I went themed. Lather built in my red, white, and blue spot prints bowl with my red, white, and blue pure bliss knot brush from Bobby at Sawdust Creations. I also dug out my Strike Gold Shave shirt from the back of the closet. Found it. Hadn’t worn it in a while. Felt appropriate.

Razor: Carbon CX Graphite ++ plate. I started on this razor with the stainless steel version and eventually picked up the graphite titanium from Sean at Carbon. It’s been my go-to for a good while now. Blade: a fresh AccuForge. Razor Emporium stocks those, and alongside Gem blades and Personna Comfort Coats, the AccuForge has been a regular in my rotation.

The Shave

Planned two passes. Ended up getting a bonus third when I zoned out on pass two and went the wrong direction. Happens.

The razor audio feedback on this Carbon CX is something I keep coming back to. Really satisfying blade feel, close and efficient. The lather from the Red, White & Rugged soap performed the way Strike Gold Shave soap always performs for me - great coverage, residual slickness through the whole pass. I’ve heard there have been some recent improvements to the base formula. All I can speak to is what I’ve experienced, and it’s been reliable every time.

One thing worth mentioning for anyone who hasn’t done this: if you want to map your grain direction, let your beard grow out three or four days, then run a cotton ball across your face in different directions. When it catches, that’s against the grain. Once you know your map you can hit the trouble spots on every pass and get close to BBS without beating up your skin. Takes about five minutes. Worth it.

The Finish

The aftershave splash is the other half of the story. I put a little on my hand earlier in the afternoon to track the dry down before the shave, and it held up. The strength on this I’d put at a solid seven to eight, especially the splash. It’s there without being aggressive. That bergamot-lavender-oak moss combination carries well.

We’re getting close to the 4th of July and America’s 250th. I’m taking the family to the air show at Jones Beach - it’s going to be a huge turnout for the 250th, so we’re planning to get there around 6:30, 7 in the morning, stop at the bagel store on the way. I believe Frank is also working on his own 250th release over at Strike Gold Shave. Looking forward to seeing what that looks like when it drops.

Frank, great collaboration, great execution on the theme, and the fragrance is genuinely a winner. Thank you again for sending this over. Hope you guys enjoyed the shave tonight. Take care.
