Red, White & Rugged: The Americana Aromatic from Strike Gold
Glenn, who runs The Luxury Shaving Hobbyist channel on YouTube, posted his shave of the day on Memorial Day and led with Strike Gold’s new release: Red, White & Rugged. It’s worth paying attention to.

Strike Gold built this one around a specific DNA - Avon’s Wild Country, the classic aromatic from the late 1960s and 1970s that a lot of guys already know. If you weren’t there the first time, you’ve probably smelled it on someone’s grandfather. That lavender-forward aromatic with warm spice and a woody base was Avon’s wheelhouse before they faded out of the American wetshaving conversation. Red, White & Rugged brings that DNA back under a different name and a new concept: Americana. Quiet strength. Rugged confidence. The kind of masculinity that doesn’t need to announce itself.
The positioning leans on Reagan, not in a heavy-handed way, but as a frame. The idea that there’s a particular flavor of American character that values craft, confidence, hard work, and tradition. Whether you buy into the political angle or not, the concept works. And more importantly, the fragrance works as a fragrance.
Here’s what Strike Gold says is in the bottle:
Top: Bergamot, Lavender, Basil Mid: Geranium, Coriander Seed, Anise Base: Oakmoss, Sandalwood, Musk
On paper that’s a pretty direct read: bergamot and lavender up top, a spice heart that could go either warm or sharp (geranium tends to round things out, coriander and anise are the wild cards), and a woody base that pulls the whole thing down into musk and earth. If the balance lands right, you’re looking at something that should feel classic and approachable. The geranium and anise suggest it’s not trying to be a barbershop - which lives more in the talc and powder - but instead a cleaner, brighter aromatic. Still masculine, still grounded, but without the vintage sweetness.
The lavender is going to be noticeable here. Anyone who’s used good aromatic soaps knows that bergamot and lavender can turn syrupy fast if you’re not careful. But pair it with oakmoss and musk? You’re anchoring it. The geranium and coriander seed should give it some character instead of just being another vanilla-forward aromatic.
What to expect: This should smell timeless. Not fresh and bright like a designer fragrance, but not heavy and resinous either. Somewhere in that middle ground where a barbershop soap meets a clean fougere. If you’re used to bay rum, you know the territory - something traditional, something that reads as “American masculine” without apology. Something you can wear without it feeling like costume or retro for retro’s sake.
Who is this for?
If your rotation includes bay rum or Old Spice style soaps, this fills a gap. If you’re the guy who reaches for a classic aromatic and gets tired of the same three options every time, this is probably worth a shot. You’re not looking for something innovative or trendy. You want something that works, smells good, and doesn’t require explanation. Red, White & Rugged is built for exactly that.
This isn’t the soap for guys who want a modern complex aromatic or something with a lot of projection. If you’re drawn to single-note scent experiences or you want something that turns heads, look elsewhere. But if you appreciate the idea that the best fragrances are often the ones people stop noticing because they’re so woven into “normal,” try this one.
The setup
Glenn rolled this out as part of his Memorial Day shave, paired with a Shave It Shave Co razor fitted with a Muhle R41 head and a Tobin’s Throwbacks Edition brush from Frank Shaving. Solid gear all around. But the soap itself is the story here. This is a shot at reclaiming a particular flavor of classic American aromatic that’s been missing from the conversation for a while.
Strike Gold is making a statement without trying to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
