Wholly Kaw Mogud Review and Shave

For this Terrific Tuesday shave and review, I’ve got a fine one from Wholly Kaw. Quick pronunciation note since a lot of people get it wrong: it’s spelled W-H-O-L-L-Y K-A-W, and a lot of folks call it “holy call,” but it’s actually a play on words. It’s holy cow. I’m bringing you a wonderful collaboration between Wholly Kaw and the Chrille Shaver called Mogud.

What Mogud Is Going For

Mogud is a complex fragrance that blends gourmand sweetness with deep, resinous woods. The scent was designed to evoke a strong, mysterious, timeless masculinity, inspired by Norse mythology and the rugged natural beauty of Sweden. I’ve been using this a good bit because I really, really like it, and man, does it smell good.

Scent Strength: 50 Proof

On the Tennessee whiskey proof scale, where zero proof is the worst and 100 proof is the best, I’m giving Mogud a 50 proof. Right there where you want it. Not too powerful, not too weak.

Breaking Down the Notes

The fragrance is complex in its simplicity. It doesn’t have a huge list of notes, but every one of them is doing work.

Top notes are whiskey and honey. I love whiskey, I love honey, they’re awesome together. This isn’t a generic whiskey note either. It’s dry, barrel-aged, and it carries hints of fermented mash and charred oak, with subtle touches of vanilla, caramel, and a little pepper in there. It’s a volatile top note. The more I work the lather, the more it blooms. Honey acts as the counterbalance, dense and viscous rather than synthetic or cloying, like real farmers market honey with maybe a slightly animalic or floral undertone. It’s the gourmand bridge that carries the whiskey’s warmth down into the earthier notes underneath.

Heart notes are tobacco, rosewood, and oud, and the dude of oud loves some oud. The tobacco here isn’t cigarette tobacco or pipe smoke, it’s more like a cured, unlit leaf. Earthy, a little herbaceous, with a natural leathery sweetness that grounds the honey and keeps the whole thing from tipping too sweet. Rosewood, also called palisander, brings a woody base with a delicate, almost spicy floral lift, some class and elegance that keeps the heart from going muddy. Then the oud, which is a notoriously complex resin: woody, medicinal, damp, balsamic. It’s the exotic powerhouse of the heart, dark and mysterious, and it intertwines with the tobacco to give the whole thing a dense, masculine core.

Base notes are dark woods, which is more of an umbrella term covering things like ebony, mahogany, and cedar. I pick up a little mahogany and a little cedar in there myself. This is the part that’s going to linger on your skin the longest post-shave, smoky and grounded, finishing the whole composition on a rugged note.

On the name itself: I looked it up and couldn’t find an exact match for a Norse god called Mogud, so I’m not sure if Wholly Kaw and Chrille built the name from scratch or I’m just missing the reference. Either way it fits the vibe they’re going for.

One more thing on the notes: according to Chrille, they went heavier on these specific top notes, the whiskey and honey, than anywhere else in their catalog. That tracks with how pronounced they are right out of the gate.

The Gear

The razor in this shave is my Eclipse Red Ring vintage. This is probably my favorite vintage razor, full stop; I like it better than any of my Gillettes. Matches the label pretty well too. Brush is my Abominable Creations, loaded with a Maggard’s boar knot. Wasn’t a scientific pairing; I just thought it was a good matchy-matchy with the set.

Into the Lather

Before I got into the soap, I hit the back of my hand with the splash. Smells very, very good, though the splash reads a touch more camphorous up front than the soap does. It doesn’t actually have camphor in it, but I get that vibe anyway, and I think the little kiss of menthol they put in the splash is what’s doing that.

This is in the Siero base, which is Wholly Kaw’s premium tallow soap base, and it’s whipping up a fine lather. Working it into my face, the whiskey and honey open things up warm and boozy, then it settles into that tobacco, rosewood, and oud heart as I go, with the dark woods holding the whole thing down underneath. The layering is really what gives it that camphorous impression I mentioned; the honey and whiskey stacked against the rosewood, oud, and tobacco just reads smoky and grounded once it’s all working together.
