Razor Works and Forbidden Root: Jerry's Review Before the Pass-Around

Razor Works razor and Forbidden Root shave soap by BCSoapsNSuch

Jerry reviewed the Razor Works razor ahead of a Shave Dad group pass-around, and threw in a review of a soap while he was at it: Forbidden Root by BCSoapsNSuch. Two products, one session. The soap ended up being the better story.

The Razor Works

Out of the box, Jerry wasn’t impressed. First shave didn’t sell it.

What changed things was patience and the Allen key the razor ships with. He spent time on it, made some adjustments, and switched over to a blade he already trusted. Once he had it dialed in, the shave improved considerably. His description once it clicked: “very decent.” Honest, not a marketing line.

Before you use this razor, two things he wants you to know. First, watch the instructional video. He strongly recommends it. There’s a real learning curve, and the video shortens it. Second, use pre-cut half blades, not DE blades snapped in half. In his experience, the pre-cuts sat better in the razor and performed better overall. This matters more than it might seem upfront.

His verdict: most people will get a solid shave out of it once it’s adjusted and paired with the right blade. The setup work is part of the deal, and it’s worth knowing that going in.

That’s the honest range on this razor. Jerry’s position is that it performs once you invest in dialing it in. Ronald’s is that the price should buy you something that comes ready to go. Both reads are reasonable, and the pass-around gives more members a chance to form their own opinions.

Forbidden Root by BCSoapsNSuch

The soap was the surprise of the session.

BCSoapsNSuch is newer, and Jerry didn’t have a baseline for them going in. What he found with Forbidden Root: nice slick lather, good residual slickness, comfortable post-shave feel. The scent delivered on the dark, outdoorsy character the label suggests.

He signed off saying he’s already looking forward to seeing what else the brand comes out with. From someone who’s worked through a lot of artisan soaps in the group, that’s not a throwaway line. For a brand without an established reputation yet, Forbidden Root makes a strong first impression.

If BCSoapsNSuch is new to you, it sounds like a reasonable place to start.
