Picking Your First AC Blade: What the Group Actually Recommends
Mykyta just pulled the trigger on his first AC razor. Now he needed blades to go with it, and he brought his shortlist to the group: Personna Platinum, Gillette Silver Blue, and Kai on the DE side, with the Schick Proline P-30 as the AC blade everyone kept mentioning. One problem. He couldn’t find the P-30 anywhere, out of stock everywhere he looked, nothing on Amazon either. He was leaning toward the milder options instead, a Kai Captain Titan Mild or a Feather ProLight, and wanted the group’s read before he ordered.
AC, for anyone who hasn’t run into the term, stands for Artist Club. It’s a single-edge blade, thicker than a standard DE, built for shavettes and certain three-piece single-edge razors. Steve spelled that out mid-thread after some confusion about what Mykyta was actually asking for.
The P-30 shortage got attention first. James suggested eBay. Mykyta had already checked, and the listings there tend to come in bulk lots with a price tag that doesn’t match a single-blade purchase. Ignacio had a better answer: Connaught Shaving carries the P-30 too, so the blade isn’t gone, just harder to grab on a whim.
On sharpness, Chris drew the clearest line in the thread. Kai Captain Milds and Feather Professional sit at roughly the same bite. The sharp end of the shelf belongs to the plain Kai Captain and the Feather Super Pro, also called the ProSuper. Worth flagging: Mykyta’s Titan Mild is a different blade from the standard Captain that Chris put in that aggressive column, so don’t let the name overlap trip you up when you’re ordering.
Feather got the most airtime, and not all Feathers are equal. Dave called the Feather Professional excellent and finds it smooth. Mykyta pushed back a little. He’d tried Feather DE blades before and found them a bit much, enough to leave some burn. Chris had a similar start. His first AC blade was a Feather Professional that came boxed with a Cobra Classic more than a decade ago, and he didn’t find Kai blades until years later, after picking up a Feather DX shavette. Jacob’s take: Professional is still his favorite, the Super Pro adds bite if you want it, and if you want less bite than either, look at the Feather Light or the Pro Guard.
It depends on your razor
Ross runs a couple of AC straight razors plus a Shield Avenger and a Yaqi Excalibur, and the Feather Pro Guard is his pick across all three. On the Shield Avenger specifically, a 1.15mm gap with 0.12mm exposure, he says the Pro Guard is what makes the razor come alive. He hadn’t tried Mykyta’s razor, a RazoRock Hawk on the standard plate, so the gap and exposure there is still an open question.

He’s not alone on the Kai skepticism. Chris mentioned Personna comfort coats and GEM blades as solid alternatives on the DE side, and more than one commenter steered around Kai for a first AC blade rather than toward it. John’s mild pick was the Kai ProTouch MG, though, so it’s not a universal no. Just a blade that splits opinion hard.
If you’re setting up your first AC or SE razor and need a place to start: Feather Professional or Feather Light for smooth with less bite, Feather Pro Guard or Kai ProTouch MG if your razor runs aggressive and needs taming, and the Schick P-30 if you can actually find one, Connaught Shaving over a crowded eBay listing. None of it is universal. The same blade that comes alive in a Shield Avenger might be too much in an Alpha Spirit and too little in something else. Your razor’s gap and exposure decide more of this than the blade wrapper does.
