Tier One Echelon Dual Action Safety Razor Review

Tier One sent me their Echelon razor to put through some shaves, and after a few weeks of running it through the morning rotation I want to share my take. This is not just another DE razor with a different handle pattern. The Echelon has a dual-action head, which means each side of the razor head is designed to do a different job. One side is built for the first pass over coarse growth. Flip it over and the other side is built for finishing passes and a closer refinement.
I went into this honest skeptical. Marketing language around razor heads is usually louder than the actual difference at the bathroom mirror. After putting the Echelon through several shaves with three different handles, I can say the two sides do feel meaningfully different, and the system works the way Tier One says it does.
The Echelon ships with the razor and five blades, is made in the USA, and is patent pending.
How the Dual-Action System Works
The head has two distinct geometries built into a single piece. One side is the Guard Side, set up for first-pass reduction on heavy growth. The other side is the Smooth Side, set up for finishing passes and a closer shave. You load one blade and use both sides during the same shave, just flipping the razor as you move through passes.
Guard Side: First Pass and Coarse Growth
The Guard Side is what you’ll use for your first pass. The angle is set up for mass removal on heavy growth, but it’s still forgiving enough that I never felt I needed to baby it on sensitive spots around the neck and jaw. Tier One frames this as the reduction side, designed for taking the bulk of the beard down without irritating skin you haven’t touched yet.
In practice, the first pass felt closer to a medium-mild DE than an aggressive one. It cleared the growth without leaving me chasing the same spot twice.
Smooth Side: Refinement and Finishing
Flip the razor over and you’ll use the Smooth Side for your second and finishing passes. This side is designed to refine the shave, giving you a closer finish with less blade feel.
After a shave or two, switching between the two sides becomes second nature, and I found the system worked exactly as intended.
Shaving Performance
This razor gave me a very close, comfortable shave.
It’s smooth, forgiving, and has a very easy learning curve. Whether you’re just getting into traditional wet shaving or you’ve been using safety razors for years, I think you’ll feel comfortable with it very quickly.
I had excellent results using my go-to blade, the Gillette Silver Blue.
If you’re someone who likes a little more efficiency, you could always pair it with a Feather blade. That’s certainly not necessary, but it’s an option for those who enjoy just a little more blade feel and efficiency.
Final Thoughts
Tier One didn’t simply make another safety razor. They built a razor with a different approach. The dual-action head isn’t just a marketing feature, it actually serves a purpose, and after using it I can say it works.
My personal rankings:
🥇 Ranger – My favorite handle. It offered the best grip, comfort, and overall feel.
🥈 Elite – I really like the modular design that lets you remove the extension and customize the handle length to your liking. The full extension gives extra reach, which makes it great for leg shaving if a partner wants to use a DE. For face shaving, the full length was way too much for me.
🥉 308 – A great compact handle that’s about the same length as a vintage Gillette Tech. While it was a little slick for my taste, the alum block trick makes a noticeable difference if you choose this handle.
The standard Echelon handle is offered in a few finishes. Here is what the black, red, and blue colorways look like up close.
Overall, the Tier One Echelon delivers exactly what it promises: a close, comfortable shave with an innovative dual-action design that’s easy to learn and enjoyable to use. Whether you’re new to traditional wet shaving or you’re an experienced DE shaver looking for something a little different, I think the Echelon deserves a serious look.
Happy shaving.
