Fragrance & Scent

Scent is a large part of why wet shaving becomes a hobby rather than a chore. A soap you enjoy smelling is a soap you look forward to using, and the artisan world has turned that into an extraordinary range: bay rum and fougère classics, gourmands, tobacco and leather, marine and citrus, and plenty that defies category.

It helps to know the vocabulary. Notes are the individual scent components, arranged as top notes that greet you, heart notes that follow, and base notes that linger. An eau de parfum carries a higher concentration than an eau de toilette and lasts longer. Many artisan releases pair a soap and a matching splash, and some add an EDP so the scent can carry through the day.

Worth keeping straight: the scent of a soap largely rinses away, and the scent of an aftershave splash is deliberately light and short-lived. Neither is meant to be your fragrance for the day. If you want longevity, that is a separate product applied to pulse points rather than to freshly shaved skin, and it does not need to match your soap at all.
