Starting from scratch: what to buy first, what to ignore, and the handful of habits that make the first month go well.
Wet shaving looks like it needs a lot of gear and a lot of knowledge. It needs neither. A mild razor, a pack of blades, a brush, a soap and something soothing afterwards is a complete kit, and most of it lasts for years.
The most useful thing a beginner can hear is that the razor is the easy part. Any of the handful of widely recommended starter razors will serve you well, the differences between them are small, and none of them will fix a technique problem. Buy one, stop shopping, and spend the energy on learning your face instead.
Expect the first two weeks to be mediocre. That is normal and temporary. Shave with the grain only at first, use no pressure, build a wetter lather than feels right, and accept a less close shave in exchange for comfortable skin while your hands learn what they are doing. Closeness arrives on its own once technique settles.
The traps are predictable: pressing too hard, going against the grain too soon, chasing a perfectly smooth result in one pass, and buying an aggressive razor because a review called it efficient. Avoid those four and the learning curve is short.
